I'm wondering, is there a benefit for us, as users, for using our mobile phone as a debit card? To be honest, I don't see any. Fact is that I'd probably have more problems when I'd use my phone for payments, as when I'd use my debit card.
For a start, I find myself leaving the house far more often without my phone, than without my wallet. It's not that I loose it that often, but it's just something that is easier to forget. Same goes for leaving the phone somewhere else. A phone is just an accesorie that you take out of your pocket or purse when you use it, subsequently leave it where you stop using it and afterwards can not remember where you left it.
Besides the fact that it will be a debit card which will be easier to forget, I don't see any benefits of integrating this function into a mobile phone either. At least not as a stand alone function. That is probably why they are already trying to come up with combined services like an application that shows you where there will be a free parking spot and will help you paying for it as well. There might be a basis for that, but it will strongly depend on the price it will cost.
Because with that price we arrive at a second possible negative aspect. How much will it cost us to use our mobile phone as a debit card? I hardly doubt that people are willing to pay a lot of money for this service. Especialy when the benefits will be so small. However, this problem might be solved by the shopkeepers. Apparently they are longing for this service to arrive so they might be willing to pay for the biggest part.
Well, at this point, I wouldn't want to use my mobile phone for my payments. I just don't see the benefits. Maybe later, when they have come up with some brilliant services. But as far as I can see right now, it will be a tough job for them to convince me!
